High-Waisted Shorts; Will the Trend Ever End?

Early last year, the 90s style high-waisted denim shorts & jeans trend made a comeback. At first, I was totally not about the trend, but after giving it a try for a year, I’ve hopped on the high-waisted bandwagon!

I own a couple pairs of high-waisted denim shorts, high-waisted faux leather shorts, and also high-waisted denim jeans. My family makes fun of me all the time when I wear my high-waisted pants. I guess they still don’t understand or like the trend. But I am totally prepared this summer!

Last summer, all of my friends would wear high-waisted shorts all the time, and I only had one pair. It was very difficult for me to find a pair of high-waisted shorts that fit me right. Sometimes, the waistline is very high which causes certain body parts, i.e. butt cheeks, to peek out of the bottom of the shorts. I don’t care how hot you are, exposed butt cheeks are never a good look! But now that we’ve had this trend going on for over a year now, finding good shorts is a much easier feat for me. Some of my favorite sites to find high-waisted shorts include Forever21.com, Tobi.com, and Etsy.com.

Once I come home from school for the summer and am actually able to shop at a mall that has more than 5 stores (thanks Columbia Mall), I will definitely be purchasing more shorts! Now that I’ve found stores to get shorts from, I’m hoping the trend won’t go away any time soon!

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is a relatively new artist. She started recording in 2010 but it wasn’t until 2012 that she started to be recognized. I just got into Lana’s music in the fall of 2013 when she sang Young and Beautiful on The Great Gatsby soundtrack. Ever since I heard that song, I fell in love.

Lana often says that she is a “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra” (Lana Del Rey). Her music often sounds like the cinematic, Americana 1950s and 60s (Lana Del Rey). In 2011, Del Rey uploaded her self-made music video for Video Games on Youtube and shortly after signed with the record label, Stranger Records. Del Rey then released her record Born to Die in 2012 where the album quickly sold 3.4 million copies (Lana Del Rey).

Lana Del Rey is an extremely visual artist. Her music videos tell a whole story to add on to the lyrics of each song. Although she hasn’t quite hit stardom as quickly as Justin Bieber, she is steadily moving up the ranks for virtually being discovered on the popular social media site, Youtube. Along with her countless music videos that hold a vintage look to them, Del Rey has also uploaded a short film, Tropico, that has reached over 3.4 million views. Even though some criticized the short film and her music videos, Lana doesn’t take it to heart. She is her own person with her own style. She describes her new album which is to be released in May as “stripped, but still cinematic and dark” (Lana Del Rey).

Lana Del Rey is a badass chick and she sure knows it! When I listen to her music, I want to be riding on the back of a motorcycle with my hair blowing in the wind! I also wish I looked just like her; she is so gorgeous and rocks the vintage-60s-chic-lounge singer-Jackie Kennedy look! With the success of her Born to Die and Paradise album, she can only go up from here!

Swag vs. Style

Within the past 5 years or so, guys have been obsessed with “swag” and “swagger” and I’m so over it! The term swagger isn’t new at all, but swag started reappearing after it was said in popular songs like Boyfriend by Justin Bieber and Swagger Like Us by TI. With the swag term came swag fashion. Gag me. Justin Bieber is the epitome of looking swag; snap backs, tattoos, bold-colored high tops, gold chains, tight pants that hang too far below the belt with tighty-whities hanging out, and too big t-shirts and tank tops.

I know that the great thing about fashion is the ability to show your personality through your own style, but this look is my absolute least favorite. Girls get crap for looking trashy, and I believe guys should be held to the same standard. Justin Bieber used to have a good sense of style when he first started his career. I was okay with my 10-year-old cousin wanting to dress like him; but this Justin has absolutely no respect for himself. He definitely doesn’t have swag. Justin’s pulling an Amanda Bynes and going off the deep end.

I would never date a boy with swag; I’d rather be in a relationship with a man who has style. You can still show off your personality through your clothing, but style shows you have more respect for yourself. Below I have added some pictures of my favorite current fashion trends for men. Ask yourself, would you rather date a boy who constantly has his underwear sticking out, or a man who shows class and sophistication through his dress choices? Hopefully you pick the latter.

Personal Stylist At Your Service!

There are so many apps I wish were on the market that would totally benefit my every day life. If I were able to create an app, and maybe I will one day, it would be called Style Me Trendy, and it would be the best fashion app out there!

There are so many times I look through my closet and I don’t know what to wear! I have so many pieces but I have a hard time of putting things together. Style Me Trendy would be your own personal stylist! All you have to do is take pictures of pieces you have in your closet, and Style Me Trendy would go through and arrange the items that go well together. The app will also offer suggestions for accessories, shoes, etc. from retailers that will go well with the pieces that are already in your closet! If you sign in through Facebook or Twitter, you will also be able to see styles your friends are wearing!

I’d really like to get this app up and running. I think people would definitely find it beneficial. Here are some pictures of what the interface of Style Me Trendy would look like. I used the app creator Yapp to create the interface. I also used images I found on Pinterest as an example.

Apricot Lane Boutique

Early in November of 2013, I was searching for a pair of fleece-lined leggings on the internet, and I came across Apricot Lane on Pinterest. The link took me to the Apricot Lane Dallas page, and I found that the leggings were only $8! The price has since gone down to $5. Naturally, I bought two pairs because you can’t have enough leggings (especially at that price!).

At the time, I didn’t know that Apricot Lane was a franchise. During winter break, I came across another Apricot Lane Boutique located in the shops of Peddlers Village in Lahaska, Pa. I fell in love. The clothes were so trendy and affordable! They were more high end than clothes sold at Forever 21, but they had a similar style. I asked the cashier if they did online orders like the store in Dallas, but he informed me that it would be too much work. I agree that online orders are a lot of work, but I believe that having an internet following and the option to order online would increase popularity and sales.

I’ve mentioned in my blog before that I would eventually like to open a boutique of my own someday. Once I found out that Apricot Lane Boutique was a franchise, I decided to do some research to see if opening a store under the franchise would be beneficial. After researching, I think opening a store under the franchise would be a viable option for me. Obviously, I would need some money to start up the store, but this is something I really want to do! However, I would want to implement online orders. It would definitely be more work, but it would also increase sales revenue.

Maybe one day there will be an Apricot Lane Boutique open near you!

Sorority Recruitment; The Best Time To Rock Your Style!

Everyone has their own idea of a sorority girl. Ever since Legally Blonde came out, people perceive sorority girls as blonde, stupid, and “loose” with boys. As a sorority girl myself, I can say that these stereotypes are so wildly incorrect. Yes, there are always a few girls or sororities that perpetuate those stereotypes, but I find sorority life to be much much more than partying and making out with a different boy every night.

I’ve been a member of one of Bloomsburg’s local sororities, Theta Tau Omega, since spring 2011. One of the things that I’ve found about sorority girls is that we have a pretty awesome sense of style! And I’m not talking about our every day attire which includes leggings, some form of letters (t-shirt, sweatshirt, spirit jersey, etc.), sorority rain jacket, and Uggs. We all look pretty fabulous at mixers and other social events, but my favorite sorority fashion time of the year is definitely during recruitment season!

Bloomsburg’s Greek Life is a little unconventional compared to other universities in regards to recruitment, so I will only speak about what I know. Every sorority on campus picks a rush theme. Rush themes are important because they show potential new members what each sorority is all about. This is definitely the time to get creative with your personal style! This year, my sorority, Theta Tau, has decided to do an Alice in Wonderland rush theme. Our tank tops are purple and say “Welcome to Wonderland” in gold foil letters. The back reads, “You Would Have To Be Half Mad To Pass Us Up”. And don’t worry, it’s covered in glitter, because why wouldn’t it be?!

You Would Have To Be Half Mad To Pass Us Up

During bid’s night, the night the rushees reveal which sorority bid they chose to sign, the members of each sorority get dressed up in some pretty awesome outfits! I already have my outfit picked out for February 20th but its top secret!

Many people criticize sororities for many different reasons, but if you could be in the ballroom on bid’s night, you’d see some pretty amazing things coming from Bloomsburg’s greek life (crazy trendy fashion being just one of them)!

Pinterest Addict

I don’t know about you guys, but I am addicted to Pinterest! For those of you who don’t know what Pinterest is, it’s a relatively new social networking site in which members can “pin” & share photos that link to outside websites on their wall. Many businesses are now turning to Pinterest to get their products out there. Fashion designers such as Lauren Conrad, Urban Outfitters, and American Apparel pin to their Pinterest boards to draw traffic to their online websites.

I turn to my followers on Pinterest to find the latest fashion trends rather than watch the Fashion Police on E! or search through countless items that I may not like on FreePeople.com. I also find that when I go shopping in stores, I turn to my Pinterest “My Style That I Like But Don’t Have” board to put outfits together.

Pinterest fashion boards definitely show you what’s in style! You can browse through and see what celebrities are wearing, or you can just look at popular images people are pinning to get an idea of what’s “in”. Users are also able to upload images of themselves as well as pin things from other websites. That’s one of the things I love about Pinterest! The other day I saw a really fabulous oxblood red maxi dress on my home screen. I am attending a wedding in the spring and I thought it would be the perfect dress to wear for the occasion. All I had to do was click on the picture and it took me directly to the website where I could buy the dress! How much easier could it get?!

If you don’t already have a Pinterest account, I definitely think you should sign up for free! It’s not only a great site to get to see the latest fashion, it’s also great to find workout routines, recipes, DIY (Do It Yourself) projects, and many more! Just a heads up, once you start pinning, you’ll never stop! But why would you want to?
